Homemade Flour Tortillas
When you live plastic free, some foods can be very difficult to find. After living in San Antonio and now Los Angeles, I love Mexican food. I love tacos. I don’t want to live without tacos, but tortillas, free of plastic packaging, are not easy to find. So, I sent my favorite chef on a mission to make flour tortillas, and they are delicious. They are also very easy to make. Follow my husband’s recipe for delicious, homemade, and earth-friendly flour tortillas.
3 cups of flour
Tsp of baking powder
Tsp of salt
1/3 cup of oil (vegetable, olive, or coconut)
1 cup warm water
1 mixing bowl
Measuring cup
1 pan
1 rolling pin (optional)
1 scale (optional)
Add the dry ingredients to a large mixing bowl (flour, baking powder, and salt), and stir together well.
Add the oil and water to the dry ingredients, and mix everything together until you form a ball. If you have a scale, the ball should weigh around 700 grams.
Troubleshoot:Add more water if the dough isn’t coming together. Add more flour if it is too runny.
Knead the dough ball for 5-10 minute. To kneed this dough, you will combine two techniques. One, fold the dough on itself, and two, push the dough forward to stretch it. Repeat those two techniques until the dough is smooth. Then, cover the dough with a towel and let the dough rest for at least 15 minutes.
Now, divide the large dough ball into smaller dough balls weighing 40 grams each. If you do not have a scale, you should make 16-20 small dough balls.
Flatten the small dough balls into circular tortilla shapes with a rolling pin or something round like a cup.
Troubleshoot:If this step is difficult because the dough is not pliable enough for you, let the small dough balls rest for another 10 minutes. The dough may not be warm enough.
When you have your tortillas flattened out, they are ready to cook. Place a tortilla in a dry pan on medium heat and cook until each side is light brown and bubbly. This will take 2-3 minutes per side. If they get brown to fast, simply lower the heat. Cook the rest of your tortillas.

Enjoy!
